Register & Be a lifesaver

Adrian Sudbury (pictured right) was a journalist working in Huddersfield when he was  diagnosed with leukaemia in December 2006. Adrian died in August 2008, during the three months before his death he campaigned tirelessly for an education programme to make young people aware of issues surrounding bone marrow donation, similar to one running in Germany to be introduced in England. With the help of Huddersfield MP Kali Mountford a petition with over 13,000 signatures of support for his campaign for better education on donation was presented to Gordon Brown, Ed Balls and Alan Johnson. This was followed by one to one meetings. The result of all this is….

Register & Be a lifesaver’ is about how lives can be saved through organ, bone marrow or blood donation. It works by volunteer speakers going into schools and sixth form colleges to talk to groups of young people giving facts the realities of donation and encouraging them to consider joining the register. The campaign was launched in schools across South Yorkshire and Bristol and aims to educate young people about how they can ‘Register & Be a lifesaver’. The pilot schools programme helped raise vital awareness about the importance of donation. Following the success of this, in part due to the efforts of Adrian’s parents Kay and Keith and a commitment of funding from Ed Balls. The next target area is to be Birmingham.

Other ways to help

If you are already a blood donor and not on their bone marrow donation register ask about it next time you give blood.

Become a blood donor.

Join The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register.

Consider carrying an organ donation card.

Take part in a fundraising event.

Anyone of 17 or over can give blood (to 66) or register as a marrow donor if under 40. Young people should talk to their parents if considering registering. Of course no one is called upon to donate marrow unless a match is made with a sufferer who needs that help to live.
